RULES AND REGULATIONS
Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers
2011 Contest Rules
1. The vegetable must be grown and cared for by the exhibitor. Barring emergencies the exhibitor must make every reasonable
attempt to be present at the weigh off. If it is still not possible to totally meet this requirement it is the responsibility of
the grower to obtain the written permission of the Site Committee for an excused absence with at least a 24 hr notification.
If an excused absence is granted it is the responsibility of the grower to arrange for a representative to be present on the
grower's behalf throughout the weigh-off including the awards ceremony. This requirement is on a case by case basis only.
This exemption cannot be used to enter additional fruit at multiple competitions on the same day. If grower requesting
exemption is part of Site Committee, he/she will be excused from decision making process.
It is the intent of this rule to include, not exclude growers and their fruit if the grower has made every reasonable attempt to
attend the weigh-off
2. An exhibitor can only enter one specimen per class. Only two entries per family or household will be eligible for competition
cash awards. All additional family or household entries will be weighed, recognized and are eligible for special
awards. Vegetable classes & top prizes that will be recognized at the first weigh-off on the first Saturday in October: a.

f. Largest Sunflower head, g. Howard Dill (prettiest pumpkin), h. Longest Gourd, I. Open vegetable class.
3. Each site will have two active agricultural agents, government representatives or Master gardeners or experienced judges
to act as judge and also inspect entries and supervise weighing. In the event that there is disagreement among the judges, the
Site Committee will cast the tie-breaking vote.
4. Color Requirements - To be eligible for the heaviest pumpkin, the entry must have rib base color of orange, cream, yellow
or white. Fruit with rib base colors of green, blue, or gray will be classed as Squash. Combinations of rib base colors
that include orange, white, cream or yellow will be considered as Pumpkins.
5. The specimen must be sound, healthy and undamaged. Entries must be free of rot, holes and / or cracks through to the
cavity, chemical residue and serious soft spots. The judge may probe any crack, hole or opening into a pumpkin, which
visually appears that it may extend into the interior cavity (in the presence of the grower only). A 36-inch by 1/16th of an
inch metal probe will be provided to the judge to probe suspect openings. An opening where the probe meets no resistance
into the interior cavity will disqualify that entry from competition. All decisions by the judges are final.
6. No foreign material (fungicides, caulking material, dirt, etc.) is permitted to be included in the weighing. Vine must be
trimmed to one inch from the stem of the fruit. The judges reserve the right to fully inspect each specimen before the weight
is announced and is official. Refusal to allow the inspection of an entry will cause said entry to be deemed "exhibition only"
7. Entries entered or weighed at any other National or International competition prior to this contest are not eligible for
competition.
8. In the event of a tie, the prize money for those tied will be combined with the next place and split equally.
9. In the event that a grower believes the judge or judges have made an error, said grower has the right to appeal the decision.
However the appeal must be made in person to the site committee prior to the commencement of the weighing of the
first specimen.
